Who are Isoleucine and Valine amino acid supplements for?

Why do I need to take Isoleucine and/or Valine?

In MSUD, if blood levels of the amino acids Valine and Isoleucine are too low, it then leads to higher leucine levels in the blood which is toxic. Therefore, it may be necessary to give some people with MSUD extra Valine and Isoleucine when they are well, particularly if they do not receive enough valine or isoleucine from their Leucine allowance (exchanges) from their diet.

In some cases, the amino acids Isoleucine50 and Valine50 may be added to the emergency feeds. These amino acids are likely to go low in the blood if they are not given from the daily Leucine allowance from food. During illness, it is commonly necessary to stop all Leucine exchanges from food to try and prevent Leucine reaching high levels in the blood.

Your dietitian will advise if Valine50 or isoleucine50 is necessary for you or your child based on individual requirements.

These supplements can be used alongside your MSUD protein substitute.
