Disorder or Disease?

You will find that most individuals have never heard about MSUD as it is very rare. Some may refer to MSUD as MSUD disease, but it is more commonly referred to as a disorder.

MSUD is a disorder of protein metabolism because the body handles protein in a “disordered” way. In other words, the breakdown of the protein eaten by an individual with MSUD, doesn’t work properly. That being said, there is a lack of consensus on the exact differences between a ‘disorder’ and a ‘disease’ – these terms are often used interchangeably. Some individuals don’t like to use the word ‘disease’ to describe MSUD because they perhaps associate the word ‘disease’ with infectious conditions (although not all diseases are infectious).

MSUD is an inherited or genetic disorder and is not infectious.
